Our photograph shows the northern end of Northbrook Street, where it joins the Broadway.
I would imagine that this picture was taken in the early sixties judging by the cars.
Shops in this area at the time included Thomas Wallis, Bollom the dry cleaners, Simpsons the stationers (who later moved to Market Street) and P A Bakers electrical shop. Peter Baker made his fortune in the 50’s and 60’s by renting black and white televisions at 10 bob a week (50p today)
Lots of years ago I was lucky enough to see black and white pictures that were taken at the turn of the century of Martin Shillingsworth garage and the Oxford Rd. The Bacon Arms, and the other hotel near the Bacon Arms
(the name temporarily escapes me.......) ......... Marcel's hairdressers, Alfreda's ballroom and the Clock Tower Monument in the Broadway and horse drawn carriages.
The Clock Tower monument was so much smaller than it is today. I cannot remember who showed me the pictures or where they could be today but I would love to see them again.

One of the really good things about Newbury.net were the host of pictures of Newbury that BB seemed to be able to stick up at the drop of a hat. It would be great to see them all extracted and put up somewhere for the benefit of those with an urge to see the history of their town in pictures. What about it Administrator.
Before the clocktower, before the clock, was the Speenhamland lamp which can still to be found up the road in Speen. Behind the lamp, which is made from one piece of stone, you can just see the end of the handle to the original 'village' pump although piped water must also be available because the 'T' handle of a stopcock can be seen near the base of the lamp, front right.
During the 50s the traffic flow through Newbury was at its worst. Pre link and pre by pass. In 1954 on one Saturday afternoon, between 12pm and 6pm over 3,000 cars passed through. There were two bad traffic blocks on a journey northwards from Portsmouth/Southampton. The first was Winchester only eclipsed by Newbury.
