Newbury.net has obtained paperwork issued by the old Borough Council back in 1968 (over 40 years ago). At that time, the Borough surveyor (Mr John Knowles) was suggesting that the current number of car parking spaces in Newbury, would be inadequate to meet the demand anticipated by the year 2000. According to Mr Knowles at that time there were approximately 2,000 parking spaces in Newbury town centre. He was suggesting that this should be increased to 5,000 spaces.

His plan involved the construction of 2 and 3 level multi-storey car parks in Park Way, Pembroke Road, the Central car Park (where they plonked the library at a peculiar angle) and Market Street.

The Market Street car park was constructed and later demolished to make way for the bus station.

It is interesting to note that in 1968 there were 2,000 parking spaces in the town centre. The latest council figures indicate that there are currently only “1,431 parking spaces in fourteen car parks”.

Plus of course the number of double yellow lines was much less and restricted parking (like outside your house) were virtually unknown

They built the Pembroke Road car park as well, and the Market Street park was replaced by the Kennet Centre park (the classic swap - spend a huge amount building a car park on the bus station and demolish a car park to make space for a new bus station).

The implication is that there were 2,000 spaces before they built the Pembroke Road and Market Street parks. Where on earth were they all?

This week, we've lost the two car parks down by Northcroft, and some bright spark thought it would be a good time to start to dig up / fence off / close / part of the West Street* car park as well. Nice one!.

On street parking along the Old Bath Road is getting to stupid levels now, and, as they encroach towards the junction with the A4 it's getting to be really dangerous.

It's what happens when the car park prices make it uneconomical for the not very well paid shop assistants to park and who have to drive to work. Unlike WBC, Bayer, Vodafone and other employers who pay top wack, they provide free car parks for their staff. What irritates me a little are all the vodafone cars that are parked in the Shaw area when the staff have been paid not to drive to work.
