Then of course in 2006 (July) the market moved to Northbrook Street while the Market place was being converted to cobbles, trees and cafe culture...

Didn't some old lady in an automatic car out of control drive through the window of the Co Op, the shop on the R.hand side of that last picture.
Is that the Red Rooster just to the left of the Co op behind the lamp post. |

She certainly did. It was a Rover 3500, she was elderly, and it was before this picture was taken, when the Co-op had large front windows, and the shop frontage was supported by cast iron round vertical columns, just inside the windows. She pinned someone to one of these poles, crushing her leg/s. the frontage was rebuilt as a result with the brick pillars to support the frontage, as seen in the picture. The grassed area just south of the Co-op, isn't that where Plenty's was demolished a few years previous, prior to the first stage of the Kennet Centre being built? The picture must be very late 70's, or even very early 80's. Pity you can't see which bank is two doors away from the Hatchet. It could have been Martin's Bank or William & Glynns, depending on the date of the photo. |
