Mum! What is that big ugly statue thing?
Be quiet son, it won't be there much longer. It's all in the Vision 1935.
The council will be taking it away soon, because it is taking up 10 car parking spaces.

It looks like that the bollards were doing a good job keeping the traffic out of the market place back then!

Everybody in that picture, male and female are all wearing hats, even the two closet gays, centre foreground.

This is a nice view looking towards the town clock. It dates from about 1900 1905 and one item of interest is the sign which today advertises Beynons then advertised the shop as Burgess.

Although lower viewpoint, about the same view as the 1900 card, this one late 1930s.

This one seems to be between the dates of the two above.

A little later than 1900 - Queen Victoria didn't arrive until 1903.

That's not a bad suggestion, along with her four lions (topical pun intended).

We could Christen it Victoria Square, but I suspect that would only serve to upset the sandal wearers who would object to the connection to the Imperialist past!

Yes, you're correct, a closer look at the postmark is April 15th 1905. She didn't die until Jan 1901. I wasn't thinking, that's my excuse.

Just as a bye the bye, the postcard, franked in Newbury at 7.10 pm is addressed to.....

Daisy
Tichborne Pl
Alresford
Hants.

Obviously the postmen in those days were a little more in touch with their customers.

And, if BB wins a place in parliament we should let him restore the sign to the Burgess name although I think that has been done before with a deft swop of the N & Y

This is perhaps a nostalgic view of the Market place pre-Vision. About 79/80's
