It may be a surprise to many to learn that little old Newbury once had a police force of its own. For 40 years this small force maintained the peace of our town. Dick Godfrey has painstakingly researched the history of this band of men—their ups and their downs, which he has recently published (copies available at the meeting).
All welcome. |

Dick (Inspector) Godfrey has been a policeman pretty much all his working life. After he retired from TVP he joined the MoD police until he retired from that. He is a real gentleman and was a real copper when he was at Newbury in the seventies when the police did the beat rather than rushing round in their little cars. I wish him success, he deserves it and you can bet his research will be meticulous. |

Is the picture of Richard Godfrey a relative and former policeman too??
Whilst the technology and tools were far inferior - I should imagine the work was a lot easier in those days (except on the feet perhaps!). |

There was certainly no Internet for people to meet and moan about them, that's for sure. The pub was the Internet back then. |

The picture is the cover of Dick Godfrey's book - his name is there as the author. |

If you're talking about policing in the 1830s, then it was simpler because if you were caught poaching, stealing or commiting some other offensive act, you were sent to Australia so repeat transgressions were rare. Murder and you had your neck stretched. Mind you, working young kids to death was acceptable and if you got short of a bob or two, you ended up in the strict regime of the workhouse. Not something for the faint hearted. |
