In conjunction with local company MWS Media, Newbury Town Council has created a short video highlighting what the Town Council does for Newbury.

http://newbury.gov.uk/News/Newburyvideo2010.htm

The video, presented by the Leader of the Council, Cllr Ifor Sheldon, was shot in late summer 2009 and is now ready for launch.

The video covers most of the services that the Town Council provides, relating to parks, open spaces, children’s playgrounds, the market, cemeteries and allotments, while also emphasising the proud history, vibrancy and civic tradition of the town.

The video is available on the Town Council web site (http://newbury.gov.uk/News/Newburyvideo2010.htm) and will be used by the Town Council at relevant conferences and meetings, as a way of introducing Newbury Town Council.  The expectation is that it will be refreshed every 2 years.

Cllr Ifor Sheldon said “It is important that we use a variety of ways to get the message out about what Newbury Town Council does.  The idea of a video was discussed as part of budget setting for 2009/2010, at a very small cost.  It’s great that the money has been effectively spent”.

Bertie Stephens of MWS Media said “We have created a variety of these sorts of videos in both the public and private sectors.  Video will be the most important marketing tool for organisations in 2010 onwards and it's fantastic the council have caught on so soon”.

Admin Note: The cost of producing the video was £1500.00 equating to £750.00 per annum over 2 years.

The soundtrack and filming technique suggest the target audience is the teenage members of the community, but the content doesn't seem to reflect this.

Surely it merits a footage of a few Cafes/boozers/nightclubs and the new cinema?

Ah bless em. Liberal priorities eh?

Producing propaganda - "the money has been effectively spent"
New veg tax on allotment holders - "this is a prudent budget"
Newbury Liberal Democrats - "priceless"

The filming technique seems to suggest a couple of teenagers with a camcorder. I can't see this video providing any useful purpose except as an ego trip for the leader of the council.

It's simply very amateurish. As such it reflects badly on the town, the subjects and the makers. But you tend to get what you pay for.

Newbury? Amateurish? perish the thought.

I wonder what Ifor's criteria are for effectively spent are!

Perhaps he means we haven't paid for the video yet but as the contract was signed and the video delivered "The money has effectively been spent!"

Could also depend on the 'brief'.

I noticed the cinema got a mention but I suspect it's modern image isn't one that fits in with NTC's image. I understand why there are traditional photos of Newbury that get included in any publicity, but it tends to be the same old stuff. I saw a 2010 Newbury calendar recently and found the images very refreshing, one of them was taken from the top of St. Nick's looking down on Bartholomew Street (Kitchenmonger). There were none of Northbrook Street, people often forget that Bart St., forms part of the town centre and is just as attractive, if not moreso, than Northbrook Street.

That's the point, you have that fast hand-held filming technique and dance soundtrack set to a rather traditional image.

True. But working backwards from the finished footage.......I wonder what the brief could have been.

Those bits that is that haven't been pulled down, built on, or left to rot until beyond economic repair.

I just cannot believe that the Town Council have £1500 to waste on this type of amateurish project.

There was also talk at work today that they spent a sizeable chunk of money producing a welcome to Newbury leaflet in Polish. Does anyone know if this is correct?

Just one thought (apart from the headace I got watching the wild panning shots and quick transitions) in a video of "what the town council do for Newbury" what did they do towards the Cinema? or am I missing the point?

How rude. They hijacked it and turned it into a political football. That took a lot of time, hyperbole and had the Lib Dem leaflet printer working overtime.
