Great photo!  St Mary's Hill Almshouses just showing on the right.  All replaced by Mill Reef House - one of the most glaring Newbury examples of the failure of the planning system.

Any idea of the date of the photo? (the later one)
The picture title suggests 1960, but it is later than that. Blue cross Cleaners (next to the Empire Cafe) opened in April 1964, and is shown in the picture. My guess is c1964-1965
I can't remember what (S)Perret & Parker were, but I do remember Midwinters & Sewards, just past there. Also the Conservative Club.
