Newbury Market Trader Sylvia Retires after 40 years trading.

Sylvia, who runs “S & S Cakes & Confectionery” at Newbury Market will be retiring on Saturday 28th August after trading for 40 years.

Sylvia joined the market in May 1970 with her beloved partner Stan who sadly passed away in 2003.  Sylvia continued to run the business single handed travelling twice a week from Portland Down to Newbury to continue selling her extremely popular products.

As the 28th August coincides with her birthday, Sylvia thought  this was an ideal opportunity to go out on a high and enjoy her retirement.

Councillor Ifor Sheldon, Leader of the Council says, “Newbury Market is an important part of Newbury’s heritage and Sylvia will be sorely missed by our regular shoppers at the market. Newbury Town Council wish her all the best for the future and would like to thank her for her loyalty over the past 40 years”.

Perhaps the whole market should consider retiring. It's way past it's sell by date.

They could then convert the area into a car park again. The piazza idea was a waste of money

Oh what a shame.  Where will we get those rolls and the lardy cakes from now!!   She'll certainly be missed - she deserves a very happy retirement.

Well, if you're worried about Lardie cakes, then those produced by the Empire have got to be the best in Berkshire if not the whole South. bnvbnvbnvbnv Sorry, I've just dribbled in my keyboard thinking about them.

I wish Sylvia a very happy retirement which i think is well deserved.
Having been the market manager for a few years i know how hard she and her late husband Stan worked, travelling from Salisbury every Thursday and Saturday despite the weather, illness etc to "make sure that the customers were fed".
S&S will be missed by many people and i hope that the council and market traders will give her a good farewell send off.
