To add further misery to shops and businesses in Bartholomew Street, temporary traffic lights are to be introduced on Blackboys Bridge to enable Southern Gas Networks to continue their existing work into the approaches to the bridge.

The traffic lights at the Pound Street junction will be suspended for the duration of the works.

(Spelling never seems to be a strong point for Newbury signwriters)

I decided it was no good whinging so I got our MP on the case, and was actually expecting this !

I haven't been there today, but believe the majority of the roadworks are now cleared in Bartholomew Street ??

If SGN/Highways had their own way, the bridge was due to be STARTED in half term week.

Funny how a few (choice) words in the right ear gets things moving, and they can manage to clear Barts St. in 2 days and not 2 weeks ????

Sadly it's a minor victory, as it will clear the roads leading up to Christmas . . . . but guess what .... they are coming back in the New Year to dig up the Tarmac and lay paving instead - yes indeed !!

By April someone will be digging up the paving for one reason or the other.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news........  To be fair to them they were working all day on Sunday so obviously they are now trying to get the job done but now the opposite side of the road is up.  Still weaving in and out of the grey bollards which you must now have seen for yourself.  The lights on Black Boys Bridge were not up when I came in this morning though so not sure when they are going to be set up.

The bad news is they wouldn't be digging now if they had done it properly in the first place ! The only reason the bridge is being dug now is because last time they did it, the contractors didn't extend the pipe far enough beyond the bridge, so it's too short.

Surprisingly, these temporary traffic lights were not the biggest problem for me this morning; it was the ones by St. Barts instead.

They should have switched the pedestrian crossing lights off. Both sets of lights were conflicting.

Also even with the chaotic conditions, the mummies were still insisting on delivering their offspring to the school gate, totally oblivious to the extra chaos that they were causing.

They never should have switched them on in the first place. Pedestrians (myself included) get fed up of the time they take to turn green and just cross. Crossing is now more dangerous because of the changes they made to the junction, so if crossing from the South of Pound Street, you can't see what is heading north along Bartholomew Street and turning right.

I think the chaos being talked about was Barts School and the temporary lights by Southern Electric. These have been cleared this evening.

Although your comments are probably true and more relevant to the OP!

Absolute chaos there this morning!

They are working on both sides of the bridge. A huge lorry parked in the middle of the road. Workmen wandering around like lost souls. Total lack of supervision. I would hate to be a shopkeeper in that part of the town.

How long before they finish?
