Newbury’s MP, Richard Benyon who represents Kate Middleton’s home community of Bucklebury has sent his warmest wishes to the couple on the announcement of their engagement.
He said:
“This is a really happy day for this couple. I am delighted for the Middleton’s and the Royal Family at this announcement, but most of all I am thrilled for this young couple who deserve to be really happy and they have the warmest support from everybody in West Berkshire.”

Did Richard really include the errant apostrophe? |

Well - he took it upon himself to speak for everybody in West Berkshire - which a) is considerably larger than his constituency and b) must include at least a few who have no desire to congratulate or support the happy couple. |

Yes...a happy couple who can afford to marry with no worries about whether they will still be in a job to pay the mortgage next year. BTW - I am not actually anti-royal, only this isn't necessarily a good news story for a lot of people. For me it is a case of: 'meh'. |

Oh, I'm not too fussed about a bit of expense for their wedding. Even Tracey and Wayne go over the top spending the price of a deposit on their first home. At least old Queenie might crack a smile. |

Has any one bothered to consider the earnings from the increased tourism, the souvenirs, TV rights, the jobs created by the event and the general uplift of spirits and moral that this country needs NOW. This web site has become the home of sarcasm and negativity of late. We all need to wake up and act more positively if we, as a nation and country, are to survive this worldwide malaise. This young couple is giving all of us a chance. |

Why should they be any different to any other young couple getting married?? |

Because they represent an institution, that whether you personally like or dislike, is revered around the world for its longevity and stability. Bertie Smith and Gerty Jones from Hermitage getting married, just dosen't appeal to the Chinese. |

The highest grossing and most visited Royal Palace in the world is at Versailles, and they topped their lot yonks ago. If we abolished the monarchy and opened up the palaces, gardens, galleries and all of their various castles, houses and homes, do you think visitor numbers would drop? Threep. |

This is just the negativity I was speaking about. I don't know where you get your Versailles figures from and when I last visited that palace, apart from the gardens, the buildings were run down and in a poor state of maintenance. In this day and age and after the abolishment of our monarchy how long do think those castles, houses and homes would remain in one piece, still full of the treasures and even left in this country. We have given up nearly everything that once made us GREAT so why don't we just take your lead and throw this part of our heritage out, I sure the income would provide a couple on months of food, clothing and shelter to the mob of losers who dislike anything beyond their lazy gain. |

Ah well, that'll be ok then, it depends on what YOU think, fair enough.

Well who pays for their upkeep at the moment? Doubt if that would change.
We have given up nearly everything that once made us GREAT
Ah..now we're getting to it...what have we given up that actually made US great?
so why don't we just take your lead and throw this part of our heritage out,
yeah, and the Forbidden City gets no visitors? It was packed the last time I was there.
I sure the income would provide a couple on months of food, clothing and shelter to the mob of losers who dislike anything beyond their lazy gain.
Are you? Remember, I never said get rid of the Royals...I just questioned your rather interesting assertion that we get more visitors because they're about. Threep |

Think you'll find the State either sold it all off, or closed it down under a previous administration.(out of spite or for profit) So I don't think that 'we the people' gave it up.
Pubs.
Normally I can follow you, but eh? Threep. |

I'm being flippant, but it seems we are giving up pubs in droves (to stay in). I'd say it was the 'pub' culture that gave us our identity. |

Ah...the scales have fallen from my eyes...got it.
Your're right, up to a point. What the village pub offered was a meeting point, a focal point, if you will, for the people to gather to spread the word.
Church on Sunday, and pub the rest of the week. That was back in the day of course.
Nowadays the Church isn't used so much, and pubs seem to be used for just getting bladdered as quickly as possible.
I'm not sure if we gave them up, or the big corporates took them from us....
But I'm still not sure if that was one of things that made US great. Lot's of other countries drank in village pubs as well.

Back on topic, engaged in November and married by April..... Hmm.. I take it that Wills and 'our Kate' will be announcing a new arrival shortly after the wedding? |

Nah, it's par for the course - the Royals don't go in for long engagements. Charles & Di - engagement Feb, wedding July Andrew & Fergie - engagement March, wedding July Ed & Sophie - engagement Jan, wedding June |
