Fuel duty was put up by the Government as of today. Petrol prices will go up another 3p a litre on 4th Jan when VAT goes up too. Heating oil will also be affected.

Shame Labour are not in - they'd have been slashing duty & VAT. NOT.

Let's not forget WHO exactly caused today's increase in petrol prices though shall we.....

Quoted Text
Alistair Darling told the House of Commons that fuel duty will now rise by just 1p a litre on 1 April. A further penny will be added to the cost of buying a litre of fuel on 1 October, and 0.76p on 1 January 2011.

Clicky link thingy

Even though the VAT increase will come from the Government in a couple of days, lets make sure those rose-tinted spectacles don't shine too much today hey

But when Darling implemented that plan, there was no plan to raise VAT. I wasn't a member of the party when it happened, but didn't Darling cut VAT when needed to help stimulate the economy? At least Labour had plans for growth, but it was right they didn't win the last election. The manifesto wasn't up to scratch and Brown was past his sell by date. But I'd take him over Cameron any day on the basis that this Government appears to be adopting the same approach which left Ireland the way it is. Who will bail us out if we go the same way as them?

WRONG. Heating oil for domestic & commercial use is rated at 5% & will not be changing.

No LABOUR is past its sell by date - and has left the country in debt, as it has done every time it has been in power.  Wake up Richard G.

Just out of fairness, are you saying that every time the Tories have been kicked out in the past, they have left no debt?

I've only ever met 2 other Labour supporters. They both display a creepy cult mentality too.
Even when Labour pulling some major fail out of their a**. They just chirp on about how Labour must have some super secret plan which will make their fail suddenly awesome and shiny.

They are as creepy as Cult of Apple followers.

I think you are being slightly unfair. Before the Lehman Brothers collapse in America, we were paying 6p per £1 in debt interest. That's 2.5p less per pound than the "golden legacy" Osborne claims the Conservatives left to Labour. I joined Labour after the election, as did quite a few others here in West Berkshire. Some are ex Lib Dem, some are ex Tory. Some are complete political newbies like myself. The party appeal can't be that bad.

Of course they do. It's not compulsory to own a car.

If one builds one's life so they they rely on the use of a car then that's their choice.

The rise in fuel prices will not only affect drivers - all products will rise in price owing to the increased cost of distribution.

Since the car became available to almost everyone the bus system has all but disappeared and housing estates have been built miles from shops that have moved to locations convenient only for the car driver.  Villages have lost almost all their shops, post offices and half their pubs - the whole country has reshaped itself around the car - simply increasing the cost of fuel will not stop people using them.

That isn't actually true in the short term. Remember the fuel protests, when hauliers were blocking oil refineries 10-12 years ago? They were busy doing this as their margins were so slim, the increases were making haulage unviable. Hauliers spend so much time under cutting each other that small rises in fuel costs are absorbed.  ( I was in the haulage business at the time )

Let's take my new daily commute as an example of why it is advisable to own a car:

Woolton Hill - Weston

By bus: 73 minutes, including 1 change.
By car: 20 minutes.

In actual fact I am hoping to move into Newbury town centre in about 6 months time, which should make the difference a little less extreme but at the moment the 'choice' of transport method is clear.

Are your method of transport, place of residence and work location are all your choice?

If so, who's to blame if they're not the right ones.

Only untrue in the short term - as was also pointed out.  Rises in cost of fuel such as those happening at present are not small - few businesses can absorb this sort of rise in costs for long.

Not at all. For a while I lived a ways out of town because that was the only property I could find that I could afford and was suitable for a family (this was around the time of the floods when mostly all rental property had been taken by those who had to move out of flooded houses). A car in this situation was essential. So, while I can see your point, and I will concede that many people who claim that a car is essential could get by fine without one, it is not an absolute, and people often find themselves in situations not entirely of their own choice.

I get what you're saying but I'm pretty sure people lived in the country before the invention of the combustion engine.

True - but every village of any size had a shop or three, a post office, a few pubs, and (most importantly) employment. The combustion engine has been a major cause of the change.

The exception doesn't disprove the rule, but the people (who are few in number) that I know who don't have a mobi, often cause 'others' to do the struggling for them.

Apparently some people find it annoying that they can't get hold of me, exactly at the moment they want too. This is normally to cover some trivial point which does not really need my immediate attention.

Having once had a mobile, I ceased when -
a) mobile phone provider cut me off when I was in dispute with them over the bill
b) I didn't miss ability to call or text people with banal trivialities
