From memory, I think we (or the select few who are allowed to participate in these public consultations) had a choice of 3.

1. Newbury District Council which already existed and would have been virtually zero cost.

2. Newbury & West Berkshire District Council, which if we were going to change was more definitive and could have been changed gradually.

3. West Berkshire District Council, which was more obscure and would cost a lot of money to change all of the stationery, road signs etc.

Guess which one we chose.

My vote went to West Berkshire - for two reasons.  1 Much of the area has very little attachment to Newbury and 2 I was p*****d off about the disappearance of Berkshire and wanted at least one of the UAs to keep the name alive.

I didn't realise that the consultation was limited - I got a form through the post, filled it in and sent it back, and assumed everyone else had the same opportunity.

Berkshire hasn't disappeared.  It existed when it was NDC.  If ever there was an advert for wasting money, the change in name is it.  Would we spend it now is the question I ask, and one that should have been asked at the time.

The initial cost of the website was/is £25,000

£25k?  You could have got a good one with that?  Surely it is just based on a pre-existing template like most site providers do.

...only joking.

Maybe ....... but you are right !!

I guess WBC had to do something though.  If they don't promote Newbury they get critisised, and then they do this and it's not great either.  Like Brian said - presumably the words will be re-written - and there is a shop on the site that no longer exists ...

A partnership of local tourism businesses and West Berkshire Council has secured funding from the Local Strategic Partnership to deliver a new tourism website for West Berkshire.

Given that a picture of the Bull at Streatley is used as the example of pubs and inns it would make sense if it appeared in the pub listing.

Donnington Valley Hotel is used to illustrate the Stay section - but isn't in the hotel listing.

Esseborne Manor (and others) appear as accessible places to stay - but not in the main listings.

Congratulations on avoiding the trap of limiting listings to West Berks and including pubs and hotels nearby in Hampshire.

But black mark for limiting attractions to West Berks and excluding Highclere Castle and Sandham Memorial Chapel. If you want to encourage tourism to Newbury you need to make the most of the relatively few attractions available.

The website is not bad, the content is iffy - if they are looking for comment on the website design then I quite like it.  But they need to sort out the content.

Just found stuff on Highclere Castle on another page - I guess the message is to sort out the listings before the site goes live.

The site does need some fine tuning but overall I think that it is a good effort. it is not the way I would have designed it, but then the project is too big for me anyway. I have had no input into it, but I am 99% in favour of what they have achieved.

If I wanted to nitpick, they have indicated copyright to www.visitnewbury.co.uk but that can soon be changed
