The one in Reading has been there for years - doing a thriving trade ... just another chain store coming to town.

Had a quick look around the new Dunelm Mill shop on the B&Q retail site. Certainly packed tight with goods and people today. A good place to shop for bedding and tableware. Other stuff, well, make up your own mind. It's probably a low cost version of John Lewis at Home.

I did notice driving around that there were 559 spaces in the Parkway carpark and 49 in the Kennet Centre. Not sure what that means other than perhaps the charge for parking at the Parkway isn't to everybody's taste.

Perhaps, User, instead of business booming we are just getting back what was lost through the roadworks etc of the last few years!

If that is the case, then given the current financial state of the country, I would say that it's pretty impressive. To have the town centre shop units let at pre-recession levels is good going.

It would be great to have another Starbucks in town like in the Kennet. Most of the cafes in the Kennet look awfully downmarket.

I always thought the Starbucks in Northbrook st was too small. The firm needs more and bigger stores.

Almost everything in the Kennet Centre is 'downmarket' - it's a very big market and well worth catering to. A Starbucks in there would be out of place - Costa were there for a while, but didn't last.  It would be nice to have a better cafe in there, but preferrably not a chain.

The unit on the right of the Bart St entrance.  They then moved to Northbrook St (ex Cargo/Toomers) 2 or 3 years ago.

If we get a 98p store to join our £1 store will there then be a gap in the market for a 99p store?

Methinks there is a little confusion here. Costa was originally where West Cornwall Pasty shop is. They opened there after the bookshop closed.

The unit to the right of the KC Bart Street entrance was Deep Pan Pizza, which closed and then that side of the entrance was refurbished into one large unit in an attempt to attract a large retailer.

This from a Norwich web page.
"The warning comes after £100 worth of fraudulent £20 notes were used in the 99p store in Castle Mall by two men who purchased a dining table and other items on Thursday, January 19."

Not quite sure what to make of this considering the comments above about £ shops and £0.98 shops.
If I went into Poundland I would expect to be charged £1.00 per item, even if I handed over a bundle of home printed notes.
It's the change . Are people that dim especially with a large item, not to ring a bell?

After the pizza place went it was a coffee shop - though I'll admit it might not have been Costa (I'm not that good at remembering brands - they're all much the same after all).  It was quite small, no bigger than the pizza place.

After being reminded I do remember Costa in the pasty shop - though I have far fonder memories of it as a bookshop.

No, you aren't keeping up with things. The original posting was suggesting that this was originally Costa. It wasn't.

It is now Caffè Nero and nobody is disputing that fact.

Coffe shops.
Are they not much the same. I enjoyed a Williams Grappa at Florians. Venice. "Costabitforacoffee+grappa".
A few years later I was treated to an espresso + local Grappa. I assure you it was petrol or Av fuel.
That would be fun in the Kennet Centre.

As in...

" I opened my eyes and - by jingo! I realised I'd married three of 'em. "

" She was half woman, half fish. Terrible in the kitchen, but a bloody good swimmer.  "

" The whole thing was made completely out of matchsticks "

" I'm afraid I was very, very drunk! "

Separated at birth maybe?

Someone should write a song about the Coffee Culture in the Kennet Centre.
Sorry. It seems I am about 300 years out of date on that idea.

This is not a Newbury comment but everyone has had builders at some stage.
I am due for a new roof in a week. I asked the boss If I had to provide tea and coffee.
"Don't worry. They all prefer Costa". At least that is something off my mind!.

I'd rather have the town gentrified that going downmarket.

There are towns like Swindon and Reading that can deal with that end of the market. Newbury needs to aspire higher as then it will be a more desirable place to go to.

Thanks Brian . I thought it was quite good, as well, but I am bypassed, sorry biased.
Once the weather warms up a bit I shall venture along to Newbury to see the changes.
Avoiding bollards and bridges of course. It has been about 8 years since I last visited.

Sober as a jidge. Kerosene is a thing of the past. (Brasso is worth trying with bread).
