A Press Release from Richard Benyon MP.

“ I recently wrote to filling station owners to highlight the fact that fuel was more expensive in West Berkshire than in areas such as Reading and East Berkshire. They replied that this was due to a lack of competitive pricing incentives in this area.  I have therefore today launched the “let’s create some competition” Fuel  price campaign.

I have uploaded to my website (www.richardbenyon.com ) a list of the best places to buy petrol and diesel locally and am encouraging my constituents to vote with their wallets and create a real incentive for filling stations to compete for our custom.   If anyone can find cheaper petrol or diesel locally than listed, please let me know and I will update my website accordingly.

I appreciate that for some constituents it will not be worth travelling a longer distance for cheaper fuel, but they may wish to fill up at a cheaper station if passing.”

An excellent idea, but I use http://www.petrolprices.com/ and their prices are slightly more up to date and somewhat different.

But full marks to Richard for this initiative.

I think Richard needs to take more water with it. Still it's his career, if he wants to commit political suicide far be it for the
rest of us to stand in his way.

I would point out though  that George Osbourne takes tax according the price paid. The cheaper the fuel, the less the Exchequer will get back in Tax, I'm sure Osbourne will be dead chuffed that someone from his own party is trying to undermine his budget forecast.

Secondly. the heads of most of the major oil companies are major donors to the Tory party. Think they do that to get Ministers to help cut their profits?

Richard will be put on the naughty step for this.

Paid £1.28/litre for unleaded at the Asda filling station in Swindon last week. If prices continue to diverge it'll be cheaper to drive there to fill up rather than use the Tesco/Sainsburys/etc. Newbury Fuel Price Rigging Cartel. I blame the council. Isn't price rigging illegal?

Is Benyon going to campaign for the duty to be reduced??

This would have a far greater impact than a difference of a few pence between different towns!!

No I thought not!!

Plus less duty on fuel would mean cuts to public services, including repairs to roads.

...and of course, people using their cars more which impacts the balance of payments, increasing fuel/crude oil imports.

Not necessarily if people start to spend more on travel, and public sector fuel cost budgets ease off, freeing up money for else where.

Just to make the obvious point, RB is talking about reducing the rip-off prices the retailers are charging in West Berkshire in comparison with other nearby areas. Even London prices are cheaper. He obviously isn't campaigning  for a reduction in regressive fuel duties.

According to petrolprices.com, Tesco have dropped their price by 1p to 133.9p for unleaded.

This appears to be incorrect. The price at Tesco is still 134.9p per litre.

What a load of bollocks Mr Benyon. So far your campaign has had no effect. In actual fact Falkland Service Station have put their prices up by 1p.

Reading, Oxford and Basingstoke are as much as 5p per litre cheaper than Newbury. Newbury motorists are being ripped off!

Lots of people get hot under the collar about petrol prices, but not me. Why would anyone drive further than they need to to save 1p on a litre of fuel. I have no idea when the prices change, and no interest either.

But working this out, at most we can expect to save £2 a week from Mr B's campaign and get local prices down to the level of our neighbouring towns. Hardly worth bothering

OK Mr Muddle you are probably being subsidised by your employer for travelling costs. Us mere mortals have to think twice about where we fill up. At Morrisons in Reading, unleaded is currently 128.9p per litre. That is 6p per litre cheaper than ALL garages in Newbury. On a 50 litre tank that is a saving of £3.00.

Now there is no sense in me driving to Reading just to fill up, but why is there such a massive discrepancy?

No subsidies here....unlike Mr Benyon, who notches up 100 miles a week in his car @ 40p a mile.

Newbury's issue with fuel prices made it on to South Today this morning - perhaps it will have some effect.  The theory given was that supermarkets set the local price and, apparently, we don't have a cost cutting supermarket.
