Spider in the Grapes
24th June 2004 14.37pm

A nine year old Newbury girl Tarnia Howe made a startling discovery amongst grapes purchased recently from the Sainsbury’s Superstore in Newbury’s Kings Road.

The grapes were purchased last Friday and the spider was found amongst the grapes that had been stored in the fridge. Tarnia’s father recognised the markings on the spider as being similar to those on a black widow. Sainsbury’s have apologised and sent the spider for analysis.

Mother Rosemary said “It was a good job that the grapes had been stored in the refrigerator, the cold probably prevented the spider from being more active”. The grapes were supplied to Sainsbury’s by growers in Mexico. It is not known at this stage how the spider got into the grapes.

It must be emphasised that this spider has not been confirmed as a black widow or any other venomous variety. Sainsbury’s are currently waiting for results of laboratory tests.

In the meantime if you have purchased grapes recently you are advised to check them carefully.
