The biggest sporting event Newbury's ever seen will take place next year, when 35,000 golf fans visit to see the English Open played in Donnington.
Donnington Grove Country Club has been chosen to host the championship, bringing top golfers Colin Montgomerie and Justin Rose.
The venue was recently taken over by Hamstead Marshall's lord of the manor Timothy Gwyn-Jones, but club insiders say a new pavilion is planned for the September 2005 championships.
The event will combine with regular showcase events like Berkshire County show - with 70,000 over the weekend - and the 20,000 attending the Hennessy Gold Cup into the area, although businesses fear that West Berkshire does not have enough hotel capacity, and that fans will stay further afield.
