History in the making
10th August 2004 14.55pm

We are pleased to announce an exciting new section on the site today – the history of Newbury.

The guide has been specially produced for residents and visitors, to chart the ups and downs of our market town over the last 1,000 years.

To the wider world, modern Newbury is largely synonymous with mobile phones, horseracing, or as the home of political protest, but these just scratch the surface.

Our town has also played a vital role in areas as diverse as weaving cloth, making glider planes and the lifeboat. Additionally, Newbury has frequently entered into national history through battles and rebellion.

The history pages will be expanded in the near future, to help readers and visitors realise what it means to live here, and where our traditions have come from.

We don’t need an anniversary to celebrate our past – it’s all around us every day!
