Cuba Crisis
31st August 2004 12.26pm

Bar Cuba boarded up, earlier today
Bar Cuba in Saddlers Court (off The Broadway) closed last week, apparently being evicted by their landlord. The surprise closure emerged last Thursday, when bailiffs moved in and changed the locks. The eviction comes amid a growing number of young bars in Newbury.

Whilst the closure comes as something of a surprise, business in the bar had seemed quiet of late. Just a couple of years ago it was a favourite nightspot with the bar packed, live DJs, and security on the door.

In the past year however business seemed to trail off, with Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights seeming eerily quiet at times.

Bar Cuba offered a 'getaway' from the standard British bar format; tucked away in Saddlers court away from the hubbub of the highstreet, it offered a taste of Cuba with a Tapas menu, unique cocktails and a selection of latin house on the sound system. Unfortunately it seemed the novelty wore off and business has gone elsewhere.

The 'Keep Off The Grass' event that was due to be held there last Sunday was cancelled, but the promoters are keen to remind music lovers that the event on Saturday 4th September in Victoria Park will go ahead as planned.

The future for the premises is unknown; previously they had been occupied by "Bruno's Brasserie" so it is thought another bar/restaurant is likely to take it's place. Watch this space.
