Mayors mosaic to go online
10th September 2004 10.07am

A huge mosaic depicting Newbury’s 1,000 year history is to be set up at the side of the library in the Wharf.

As reported here three months ago, town mayor Mike Rodger wants everyone living in Newbury to place a piece of the mosaic to create a lasting legacy when it is unveiled in April.

The 50ft by 6ft pictorial history will take in the development of the church, racecourse and technology industry which put the town on the map, along with a segment on the bypass.

Newbury.net has teamed up with Mr Rodger to design a website to keep the project in the public eye through the crucial launch period and beyond.

Website editor Brian Burgess said: “This is an innovative scheme, and we’re delighted to lend our support and expertise. Hopefully, newbury.net readers will be as keen to get involved as we are.”

Mr Rodger is seeking funding from local business and property developers, and will begin by auctioning off pieces for the Jack of Newbury section at the Mayor’s Barbecue at Newbury Manor Hotel, on Sept 26.

The website www.mayorsmosaic.co.uk will also go live to coincide.
