Three for the weekend
10th September 2004 13.30pm

Down and dirty

There’s a mouthwatering line-up of four rock bands for the first heat in the 2004 Battle of the Bands competition. The Waterside Centre will be rocking to Junglists, Second Hand Rule, GARY, and Two Left Feet on Saturday. The show kicks off at 7pm. Tickets £4 on the door.

The Admiral’s vice

The Watermill’s summer musical closes on Saturday, so it’s your last chance to see Pinafore Swing, the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta ‘updated’ with a 1940s swing band feel. The comic tale of how an admiral woos the captain’s daughter on HMS Pinafore, while she is in love with a mere sailor, will put you all at sea. The show starts at 6.30pm, and tickets are still available from

Last of the fetes

Chieveley village fete is one of the last in the Newbury area, and promises much family fun. Footballer-turned-horse trainer Mick Channon will open the event, featuring archery, tug o war, go-karts, and bouncy castles. The vicar will be getting a soaking in the stocks, and organisers have also laid on a special football game to help raise money for the village hall. Everything starts at noon on Sunday, in the school playing field.
