Rural activists to protest at show
17th September 2004 10.08am

Rural activists are planning to show their displeasure at Newbury MP David Rendel’s anti foxhunting stance at the county show tomorrow.

Hunt followers from Lambourn to Mortimer are furious with the Bucklebury-based Liberal Democrat for voting to ban the bloodsport in a Commons vote on Wednesday.

They are planning to set up a ‘Traitors Gate’ at the showground with headshots of Mr Rendel, alongside high profile figures like Tony Blair, architect of the ban Don Foster, and rural affairs minister Alun Michael.

One activist told Newbury.net: “He’s ignorant of the effect this will have on our way of life. He’s done it for votes in Newbury and Thatcham, so we’re going to let him know how we feel.”

Although the show organisers are opposed to a hunting ban, and have sanctioned demonstrations in the past, they are in the dark over the forthcoming protests.

The latest parliamentary bill saw party allegiances loom large, with only six Conservatives voting for a ban, although one in three Liberal Democrats voted against a hunting ban.

The debate was overshadowed by rioting outside, and protesters broke on to the floor of the Commons, in the most serious security breach since the days of Charles I.

Traitors Gate is at the Tower of London, and in the middle ages was lined with heads on spikes of those convicted of treason, including Wat Tyler, Ann Boleyn and Guy Fawkes.
