| For two years, endless committees have been discussing how to raise Newbury’s profile, but a new book has beaten them to it after naming Newbury in the top 50 of Britain’s ‘crap towns’.
More than 20,000 people from around the country have been nominating the worst places to live in Britain, and Newbury came in 37th.
The survey was organised by Sam Jordison after his book Crap Towns became a cult hit, featuring Hull as Britain’s top cesspit. He was inundated with further suggestions, and the sequel, Crap Towns II – the Nation Decides, is out on Friday.
This year’s list contains some surprising choices, with Newbury faring better than Windsor (2nd), Edinburgh (4th), Bath (7th) and Winchester (21st), which all got more votes.
Most of the votes are understood to have come from disaffected locals who emailed Mr Jordison via his website. Newbury.net has asked the publishers for an explanation of the town’s placing, and results will be published here as soon as we get them.
