| Cops cycle for Derek
Police officers mourning the sudden death of one of their colleagues are embarking on a 75 mile cycle ride in his honour.
PC Derek Boulton died of a heart attack two weeks ago while jogging, so Sgt Danny Hargreaves, PC Matt Thorngate and PC Phil Eyles are riding from Oxford to Cambridge on behalf of British Heart Foundation.
Sgt Hargreaves said: “We were all really shocked at Derek’s sudden death and this seemed like the perfect way to try and do something in memory of him. It is particularly poignant as Sunday is National Police Memorial Day.”
The trio are looking for local help with sponsorship. Contact 0845 8505505.
The one that got away
Newbury’s only fishing tackle shop closes on Saturday after less than a year in business. The unit formerly occupied for 15 years by Field and Stream will become vacant again after the shop closes for the last time on Saturday evening. Many items are heavily discounted, and anglers will have to use the tackle shop in Thatcham to stock up.
Truly scrumptious
Farm managers in Hamstead Marshall are despairing of an increase in young lads raiding their fruit and vegetable gardens. The Elm Farm Research Centre has been targeted by teenagers hopping over the fence, and taking the odd apple or pear, and have appealed to local families to keep a close eye on the whereabouts of their children.
Take the bull by the horns
Local wildlife enthusiasts are after two volunteers to help manage nature reserves. The Berkshire Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust are looking for two committed environmentalists for three days a week working on reserves such as Greenham Common, Thatcham Reed beds, and the Lambourn Downs. Previous livestock handling is desirable, but training and transport will be laid on. Speak to Kate Dent on 01628 829574 or email: bbowtberks@cix.co.uk |
