Race day to move?

The traditional race day to accompany Newbury Show is to be moved, after traffic police became overstretched at this year’s event. West Berkshire police Inspector Pete Oliphant has met with show organizers and racecourse managers to ensure adequate cover next September.

Festive fun

Traders the length of Bartholomew Street are planning another festival atmosphere in the run-up to the crucial Christmas spending spree. A similar event last month improved takings at shops like Nature’s Corner and Emporium, but the event on Friday November 26, featuring decoration and entertainments, like balloons and circus acts.

School’s rules OK

Newbury’s Catholic school has been told ‘could do better’ by Ofsted. Inspectors found St Josephs Primary School to be good at English and IT, but weak at maths and science. Teaching standards had slipped over the last five years, but homework and extra-curricular activities were praised.
