New Wharf plans to be revealed
03rd November 2004 8.2am

Plans to ban cars from the Market Place and turn the town’s main square into a tree-lined piazza are likely to get underway in January.

West Berkshire Council says it already has the money to go ahead with the scheme, and has detailed plans, but still wants to hear views from the public, before it decides what to do.

However, there is not enough in the pot for a feature fountain in the middle of the Market Place, as planned.

A previous poll asking if cars should be banned, run by Newbury.net, found the town split 50-50 on the issue.

At the same time, the new-look Wharf will be revealed, where a new boat basin will replace two car parks.
