Community spirit for Clay Hill
11th November 2004 8.51am

Plans to improve community spirit in the Clay Hill area of Newbury moved a step closer last night, after local people agreed to form a residents association.

An overwhelming majority want representatives from the Clay Hill area to pull together into a single group, to spruce up the area, and push for better services.

Around 25 residents met with Thames Valley Police, Sovereign Housing, West Berkshire Council and Newbury Neighbourhood Watch to put together a list of pressing concerns and decide how best to tackle them.

Those attending the gathering at the Riverside Community Centre heard how

anti-social behaviour had generally receded on Turnpike, but that other areas were in need of attention, and that litter, graffiti and poor lighting all needed tackling.

Sovereign’s Housing Officer, Linda Watson, said afterwards: “We are really pleased the residents chose to form an association. From our experiences elsewhere, these organisations are creating lasting change in their communities.”

After the meeting, Insp. Pete Edwards, of Thames Valley Police, said: “We’ve come a long way in the last two years, but this isn’t just about Turnpike. We have a special determination to get the whole of the Clay Hill ward involved. It is all about residents working together with the agencies including the police, Sovereign and local council. They may wish to bid for money for neighbourhood wardens, or to help us stamp out anti-social behaviour. It is a great opportunity for the residents to work together and make it a better place to be.”

The meeting to elect the members and decide a name for the new residents association in Clay Hill will take place at 7.00pm on Wednesday 1 December, at Fir Tree School. More details will follow closer to the time.
