Shop staff tied up in raid
12th November 2004 13.55pm

STAFF at the Majestic Wine Warehouse in Newbury’s London Road were left shocked after two masked men forced their way in, tied them up, and made off with £800.

Around 8pm on Wednesday evening, staff were locking up when they were approached by two men in balaclavas, armed with a handgun and a knife, and bundled back inside the shop.

The distressed workers were then forced to open the safe, before their hands and feet were tied up with the phone lines, flex and gaffer tape. They made off in one of the shop assistants’ cars, with £800 cash.

About five minutes after the robbers left, the staff managed to break free and call the police. Although they were not injured during the robbery, the three workers were very shocked and distressed by their experience.

The robbers were both white men in their twenties, of average height, skinny, wearing black balaclavas, black tops, jeans and trainers.

Det Con Chris Pullen, investigating the incident, said: “We are keen to speak to a man who came into Majestic Wine Warehouse sometime between 7.30pm and 8pm, and bought two bottles of wine. He is not a suspect, but may have valuable information to assist our inquiry.”

Anyone who saw two men behaving suspiciously in the London Road area last night, or noticed someone leaving a red VW Golf in Shaw Road, is asked to contact DC Pullen on 0845 8505505, or anonymously on 0800 555 111.
