Further enhancement to roundabout.
11th January 2005 17.34pm

A permanent sculpture is planned for the St John's roundabout, to enhance the southern gateway into the town. The sculpture "Couple in Conversation" by Johannes von Stumm is being fully funded from grants and sponsorships.

The sculpture (subject to planning permission) will depict a man and a woman, standing, placing their hand on each other's shoulder in a gesture of tenderness and friendship, a physical gesture of communication. The man and the woman are of equal height so that none overpowers the other and their faces are turned towards each other.

The sculpture will be between 3-6m tall and made out of 40mm thick steel with a total weight of between 3.5 and 7 tons. The size of the sculpture has yet to be decided.

The project forms the next stage of the Town Trail and will be discussed at the next full council meeting of Newbury Town Council. To be held in the Town Hall on Monday 17th January at 7.30pm.
