Big malls make their mark.

A poll to find out your favourite shopping destinations has thrown up little surprise, with Reading and Basingstoke coming out on top.

Nearly 500 newbury.net fans voted last month, with more than half saying they prefer the Oracle and Festival Place above other towns in the area.

However, it emerged that one in 10 in the Newbury area prefer the quieter parades of independent shops in Marlborough to the pumping indoor malls.

The poll confirms earlier research carried out for the Vision of Newbury, which found that 40 per cent of people in West Berkshire regularly go shopping in Reading, rising to half at Christmas.

Newbury is responding by building a new shopping centre in Park Way, along with better promotion of what the town has to offer.
