| SOVEREIGN HOUSING Association’s tough stance on nuisance neighbours is paying off on a Newbury estate.
Following news that crime has fallen dramatically on the Turnpike estate in Newbury, Sovereign confirmed that measures taken to improve unacceptable behaviour have worked well.
Over the past year, all residents moving on to the estate have had to sign tough new tenancies, with a fast-track eviction clause if they step out of line. Research by Sovereign proves this cuts incidents of anti-social behaviour by a third.
Furthermore, Sovereign has persuaded Turnpike youngsters to sign up to Acceptable Behaviour Contracts when they step out of line. “This is a valuable tool for us to nip problems in the bud,” said local housing officer Linda Watson.
Sovereign also supported Curling Way residents gathering evidence against a neighbour from hell, who had subjected the estate to months of loud music, parties, and other antisocial acts. Sovereign evicted the tenant last November.
Resident Participation Manager Nick Cross helped set up the initial meeting three years ago after mounting concern at a deterioration in life on Turnpike.
He said: “We have stayed the course on Turnpike, backing residents who shouldn’t have to tolerate unruly neighbours. It’s great news that headway is being made, and we expect the new residents’ association to provide a big impetus for the next phase.” |
