ANOTHER community initiative has been unveiled in a bid to cut crime and foster a new sense of community on the Nightingales estate.
The first revamped play area has also opened last Friday after a £35,000 refurbishment of rundown facilities at Hamilton Court.
Sovereign’s Regeneration Officer Mark Corfield said: “The community told us what they wanted to make the area cleaner and safer, and with the help of our partners, we are delivering. The design of the Nightingales means there is a lack of green space, so these new play areas means that families can spend more time outdoors.”
Newbury Town Councillor and Nightingales resident Arthur Johnson, added: “It’s the start of a bright new future. I am pleased the park is open in time for the school holidays.”
Around £70,000 from Sovereign, Thames Valley Police, and Newbury Town Council has been directed to make the two main play areas more enticing, and local residents have already been asked to tip off the wardens if anyone starts tampering with the play area. Work on Dickens Walk play area is underway and a grand opening is planned for Easter.
The play areas were named as top priorities by the local residents. Other work coming up includes improvements to some of the pavements, alleyways and open spaces. |
