| Controversial plans to repave the Market Place have been extended as far as the Post Office in Cheap Street, Newbury.net can reveal.
The new design is to be unveiled to Newbury Retail Association this evening, featuring a full paved area on the corner of Bear Lane and Cheap Street. Meanwhile, the Post Office is looking to team up with a convenience store such as Allders, who will snap up sites like Newbury and rebuild a new counter for Post Office customers.
Six years after £400,000 of taxpayers money was spent on repaving, West Berkshire Council decided to pump in another £600,000 to aid the Vision for Newbury.
Even though the public have yet to be asked if they want a lavish market square, featuring fountains, tree-lined piazza, and a car ban between 10-6pm, contractors are poised to move in, and complete the work before Christmas.
According to the plans obtained by the town’s favourite website, the pedestrian crossings at the Market Place are to be resited, as the junction is expected to take up to 13 per cent more traffic for trips to the nearby cinema, about to be built.
As reported last week, war veterans have long planned a VE Day gathering in the Market Place, two weeks after workmen begin ripping up the Bath Stone flags laid in 1998. The British Legion has been assured that the place will be cleaned up before the event.
The Vision of Newbury is a 25 year plan to stop shoppers spending more time and money in major retail centres like Reading and Basingstoke. The main plans all involve building over nine town centre car parks, to be replaced by three multistorey car parks at the Wharf, Station Road, and Park Way.
After months of investigation into the ramifications of the plan by newbury.net, those behind the Vision will finally unveil details at Newbury Retail Association meeting at Caffe Uno this evening. However, moves are underway to gag the media from revealing any more. |
