| Election fever
The General Election has been announced, heralding the start of the closest political contest in Newbury in a decade. At least six candidates are expected to declare themselves for the seat held by Liberal Democrat David Rendel since 1993. Both Conservatives and Lib Dems are on standby to erect thousands of posters across the constituency, ending months of “phony” electioneering by the major parties.
Van attacked by yobs
Local yobs are being blamed for damaging a Mercedes van in the Skyllings estate off London Road at the weekend. A gang of teenage youths was seen hanging around the area before a window was smashed.
Camp revamp
Work has started to renovate the Northbrook Street entrances to Camp Hopson. The family-run department store is undergoing a £6m revamp, and has built a new extension at the back of the store, which dates back 300 years.
Shaw fire warning
Workmen renovating Shaw House recently uncovered an interesting notice dating from World War Two. A sign beneath some coathooks issues instructions on what to do in the event of a fire. Shaw House was requisitioned by the army during the war to liberate Europe, and was variously used by British, American and Canadian troops. |
