Big guns in Newbury for final push
29th April 2005 8.41am

Newbury’s Conservative candidate will be wheeling in Boris Johnson and Michael Howard to boost votes for Richard Benyon in the final days of the election next week.

Their arrival comes as both Liberal Democrats and Tories sought to attach themselves to the plans for a Newbury cinema. A 25 year lease will be signed by Apollo Cinemas today, and to mark the occasion, Liberal Democrats brought film buff Barry Norman to Newbury earlier this week for a photocall with Lib Dem candidate David Rendel.

Conservatives are producing a mailshot to 50,000 people this weekend saying they support the cinema – the Kennet Centre received £500,000 to subsidise the rent – and not to fall for “Lib Dem propaganda”.

Hundreds of activists are working day and night, to encourage a high turnout, and to persuade the one in seven with postal votes where to put their X.

Newbury.net will bring you the results as they happen, with reaction, when the ballot is announced at 1.30am next Thursday
