| Longstanding parking problems outside the Plough on the Green pub in Pyle Hill are to be sorted by building a new pavement across the heavily protected common.
West Berkshire Council wants to dig in a 15 bay layby in Greenham Road to stop residents and pubgoers from parking on the ancient grassland. Part of the £60,000 scheme is to move the pavement to the other side of the row of trees on the edge of the common, for which the council will have to get special permission from Environment Secretary Margaret Beckett.
Most residents are in favour of the scheme, as is Greenham Parish Council, which originally wanted bollards on the common to keep cars off the grass.
Other measures include double yellow lines at the entrance to Southbys allotments, and a cycle lane has been added after lobbying from West Berkshire Spokes. |
