Newbury big boat chaos
02nd August 2005 12.13pm

British Waterways were forced to dismantle new locks in Newbury last weekend because a narrowboat was too big to get through The mammoth butty was en route from Bristol to Reading, then the Thames and the Channel to France, but was two inches too wide to pass through the replacement locks installed earlier this year.

Newbury Lock is apparently the narrowest lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal, and the new gates had made the entrance impassable for the narrowboat.

Co-owner Mike Powell told newbury.net he was not happy about his unscheduled stop, and still wanted to clear the Newbury area before the Waterways Festival on Sunday brought extra traffic.

Our picture shows the barge 'Little Mouse' entering the lock after British Waterways had dismantled part of the lock gates.
