Cinema worries continue

Local councillor Roger Hunneman is taking up newbury.net’s revelations of more delays with Newbury’s cinema with West Berkshire Council on Thursday. Cllr Hunneman will quiz the Tory cabinet on when the six screen multiplex - subsidised with £500,000 of public money - will be delivered.

Raiders shopped at retail park

Police are keen to speak to a woman who said she saw two women stealing shoes from Sports World at Newbury Retail Park.

Shop staff were alerted to the incident last Tuesday afternoon by the woman, but she did not leave her name, and police feel she may have information vital to the inquiry.

The two women are alleged to have grabbed several pairs of shoes, put them in a bag, and made off in a transit van. Pc Lucy Skinner is investigating.

Oops! Surf shop not kosher

New surfwear shop Animal opened in Northbrook Street this week, but has already fallen foul of West Berkshire Council. Newbury’s latest fashion outlet failed to apply for planning consent, and town planners have ordered the chain to put in for consent. Previously, Starbucks, Café Nero and Gordons Bar have all been granted retrospective permission after making changes.

As we reported last month, Animal moved into the former B&B Hifi shop last month.

Meanwhile, new neighbour Tchibo is also getting a rocky ride for going through the right channels. The German coffee concept store wants illuminated signage on the shop recently vacated by Swift Dry Cleaners, but Newbury Town Council has raised objections.

No to new estate agent

One of Newbury’s most rundown buildings won’t get a new lick of paint yet. Town planners have said no to a new estate agent, with two flats upstairs, at the offices between the Post Office and Seymours in Cheap Street. The developer is appealing.
