A twinning request from Canada
06th September 2005 11.44am

Newbury Town Council have received a request from Newbury, Ontario to become a twin town. The request was discussed at last nights meeting of the Arts and Leisure Committee in the Town Hall. The meeting agreed that the Mayor was to respond to the letter and that the request should be forwarded to the Newbury Twin Town Association.

Newbury Ontario currently has a population of 402 and the following is taken from their own website www.newbury.ca : “It (Newbury Ontario) was known as Ward’s Station until 1854 when a post office was established and was renamed Newbury after a village in England. Most of the residents came from England or Northern Ireland.”

Newbury UK visitors to the website should take a special interest in the map. Note the symmetrical construction of the streets. No problems there with providing alternative routes. Although there does only appear to be only one route over the railway
