The 16th century Northbrook Street pub has been a haven for music fans, especially since Simon Owens took over five years ago. But fire safety officers banned performances after noting that there was only one entrance and exit, which is judged to be unsafe for large gatherings. Mr Owens booked a mixture of local and international acts, along with DJ sessions over the years. Newbury.net understands he will leave the pub in February.

But police fear an increase in crime, public disorder and nuisance, and have asked West Berkshire Councillors to rule on the matter. |
