| A brand new all-weather, flood-lit sports and games area at Greenham Court Primary School, had its official opening yesterday (Monday). And, with the specific aim of being available for the whole community as well as pupils at the school, it is guaranteed to receive a very broad welcome.
The facility comes courtesy of a partnership between the school, West Berkshire Council which is the local education authority, and the Big Lottery Fund which has awarded the £72,000 to make it all possible.
Technically called a 'multi-use games area', the hard surface, flanked by substantial fencing, makes it ideal for ball-games. It is currently marked out for football, basketball and netball, but could be used for a whole range of activities. A major feature is the floodlights. When the school's activities finish around 6pm, any local community group will be able to book the facility – through the school - for their own use, right up until lights out at around 9.30.
Audrey Appleby, during her time as governor of the school and West Berkshire Councillor, campaigned long and hard for the funding. "Several years ago I receive a batch of 22 letters from the schoolchildren asking for better play facilities. That sowed the seeds. After much work, I'm delighted we've managed to provide what is wanted." |
