Newbury sextoy shop bypasses rules
04th October 2005 14.8pm

Lingerie and sextoys shop Ann Summers opened for trading in Newbury yesterday even though it still does not have planning permission for controversial new signage at its Northbrook Street store.

West Berkshire Council has received complaints from the public about large images of women wearing well-placed tassles, as well as concerns from Newbury Town Council, but still the shop has opened without permission. West Berkshire Council said the application, submitted just four weeks ago, was still “pending”.

It’s the latest in a string of illuminated signs to be installed in Northbrook Street, including coffee shop Tchibo, which received permission, and surfshop Animal, which applied retrospectively.
