| Newbury.net have discovered the identity of a local hero who rescued a drowning man from the Kennet and Avon Canal on Wednesday afternoon.
Andrew Nalty a kayaking instructor at the Waterside Centre, came forward on Friday evening after seeing our front page news story. Andrew said “A man came running into our office at the Waterside to alert us of the situation. The man was floating face down in the water”.
Andrew jumped into the water and pulled the man to the side, where he was helped by bystanders to pull the man onto the canal bank. Andrew then administered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation until the paramedics arrived.
Paramedic Simon Moorwood said “without his (Andrew’s) intervention, the patient would certainly have died in the water. He did a great job”.
Andrew works for West Berkshire Council at Adventure Dolphin which is based at the Waterside Centre. Adventure Dolphin offers a wide range of specialist courses both in land and water based activities. All instructors are fully qualified and hold first aid and life saving qualifications.
