Councils lose conservation battle
26th November 2005 0.27am

A new shop and 13 flats will be built in Town Mills after Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott’s department overturned local council objections.

Empty offices at Bankside House will be demolished to make way for the new development, after a government inspector said the new development would “add interest” to the waterfront, and that the design would “harmonise well” with nearby buildings – including St Nicolas’ Church.

Also, the government said West Berkshire Council’s demands for expensive CCTV before permission would be granted wasn’t justified.
