M4 collision - Newbury man dies
23rd December 2005 11.14am

A 39-year-old Newbury man has died following a collision on the M4 motorway close to the Membury Services.

The collision occurred at 11.15pm on Wednesday (21/12) between junctions 14 and 15, at the start of a two lane closure.

It appears a green Citroen Xantia swerved to avoid a blue Vauxhall Vectra at the start of the closure and collided with the rear of an articulated lorry parked on the hard shoulder.

The driver of the Xantia died at the scene.

The M4 was closed from Junction 14 until 6.30am (22/12) with diversions put in place from Junction 13.

A 33-year-old man from Holland has been arrested on suspicion of unauthorised stopping on a motorway and of causing danger to other road users. He is still in police custody.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call PC Peter Lloyd via 0845 8 505 505.
