Doctor poses as girl of 13
03rd January 2006 16.50pm

A doctor faces a disciplinary hearing of the General Medical Council in Manchester today. Doctor Thomas Dent claimed to be a 13 year old girl ‘Katie Beckinsale’ and emailed 26 teenagers using indecent language about sex and underwear.

Dr Dent, 40, of Newbury was only caught by chance when a special constable sat next to him on a train and looked over his shoulder. Dr Dent was using his laptop looking at pictures of teenage girls. He was arrested by Hampshire Police on 29th June , 2004 on suspicion of possession of indecent images of children and of grooming children.

Dr Dent told police that he suffered from urinary problems as a youth and wanted to provide a “friendly ear” to other youngsters suffering the same problem.

The Crown Prosecution Service decided to drop the case, because there was no realistic prospect of a conviction. The GMC are deciding today if he should be charged with serious professional misconduct.

The hearing is expected to last four days
