| Roadworks and diversions continue to cause annoyance to drivers and shoppers as the Northbrook Street makeover enters its third week.
Extra signs have been erected to advise visitors that the shops are still open. Even with the obvious delays and inconvenience, West Berkshire Council is still refusing to re-open Park Way Bridge to the ordinary motorist.
Nobody can seem to understand the logic behind the closure of 2 of the three bridges across the canal in central Newbury. At peak times, traffic on the A339 is at a standstill and motorists are being further antagonised by “on the spot” fines for daring to venture across Park Way Bridge in a desperate bid to avoid the traffic jams.
Park Way Bridge was rebuilt in 2001 at a cost of nearly £1.3 million. Currently only buses and taxis are allowed to use it, with 2 way working controlled by traffic lights.
There is even a suggestion that the bridge may not reopen in November, when the current phase of road works and enhancements are complete. The bridge may continue to be used for buses only so that the newly enhanced Northbrook Street can be fully pedestrianised in time for Christmas.
It is also feared that if ordinary traffic is allowed to use the bridge after the proposed closure of Wharf Street, then gridlock will occur on the mini roundabout outside the telephone exchange. |
