A victory for common sense says MP
04th April 2006 08.37am

Responding to the fantastic news that the threat to many of West Berkshires rail services has been withdrawn, Newbury’s MP, Richard Benyon said,

“This is a triumph for everybody who contributed to this campaign. The original Department for Transport proposal was going to cause misery for rail users and misery for drivers with the greater congestion it would have caused. I am glad that my petition to Parliament, my meetings with Ministers and my co-ordinated campaign with other MP’s and rail user groups has resulted in the reinstatement of most services on the Bedwyn line.

I remain concerned about the loss of late night services from Paddington and the proposed cuts to the weekend timetable. I intend to keep the pressure up to ensure there is a complete rethink across the whole draft timetable.”

Richard’s campaign included meetings with the Minister responsible, Derek Twigg MP, and with Secretary of State, The Rt Hon Alistair Darling MP. He also submitted a petition to Parliament with signatures he raised from outraged rail users across West Berkshire. He provided campaigners with information and a focus for their campaign by setting up a website: www.saveourtrains.co.uk He also submitted a detailed response to the consultation process.
