| In 10 days’ time, most of Newbury will be going football mad, and trying to catch a glimpse of local soccer sensation Theo Walcott in the white shirt of England. But at his old club AFC Newbury, where he scored 100 goals in a season, more bad news is afoot.
Newbury.net understands that the Faraday Road ground, opposite the Newbury Weekly News office, is on the cards to be turned into a car park. West Berkshire Council discussed various options at the town centre steering group last Friday, and will go public at Newbury Retail Association on June 13.
The hunt for new car parks has been on the cards since plans to build on 600 spaces at Park Way were approved by the council six weeks ago. The prospect of using Victoria Park has been vetoed, and it is hoped shoppers will use the ground and walk along the towpath to reach Northbrook Street, as almost the whole of Park Way will be fenced off for three years to dig a massive underground car park and £120 million shops and flats complex. |
