| Council contractors will not finish the £800,000 revamp of Newbury’s Market Place in time for Christmas, newbury.net can reveal.
With less than a month to complete the latest part of the controversial Vision 2025 project, last minute design changes at the Cheap Street/Bear Lane corner means that the workmen will have to return in the New Year.
The initial plans did away with pedestrian crossing to the Post Office, but this was reversed recently. The redesign means contractors Hope & Clay will not make the November 17 deadline.
Market traders are reporting bumper profits from their temporary home in Northbrook Street, and are requesting to stay in Northbrook Street permanently after the busy Christmas shopping period.
Meanwhile, the Tories are also unveiling plans for a new one-way system next month. This follows the move to ban cars from Mansion House Street, Wharf Street and Market Place during the day.
But there could be good news for market traders if they return to the Market Place in January, as the pay and display meters at Bear Lane car park are to be replaced with a Kennet Centre-style ‘pay-on-foot’ system. |
