Racecourse plans imminent
23rd November 2006 8.59am

Newbury Racecourse is expected to submit a planning application for 1450 houses next week, newbury.net can reveal.

Despite the misgivings of many residents living in and around East Fields, we understand that the racecourse and David Wilson Homes feel they have addressed all major concerns and are ready to put their plans to West Berkshire Council.

Delegates from the racecourse and West Berkshire Council met last week to discuss local traffic concerns, and racecourse director Mark Kershaw said recently: “Ultimately, traffic management is a matter for West Berkshire Council. However, we believe our proposed redevelopment could be an opportunity to actually sort out a number of traffic issues for local residents which have consistently surfaced during public consultation.”

The racecourse has three areas of surplus land which it wants to redevelop, despite already making £6m profit on £15m turnover, largely from the sale of The Chase to David Wilson Homes a few years ago.

Objectors are calling for a new road to be built next to Kings Road Scats store before construction begins, and for Boundary Road to be closed to through traffic.
